Mehndi is a traditional body adornment typically used at weddings, holidays and other special occasions in the India, Morocco, Sudan and many parts of the world. It is a paste made from ground henna leaves that, when applied to the body, stains the skin a beautiful deep ochre.

On my first trip to India I was lucky enough to attend my girlfriend’s traditional Indian wedding and be part of her Mehndi celebration. The wedding was a two weeklong affair with different ceremonies each day. A day or two before the wedding day came the celebration, attended by all her girlfriends and family. Each of us had our own Mehndi artist. The artists used cones filled with the henna paste to create intricate designs on our hands. The bride’s hands and feet were both decorated. I admired that they work free hand, making up elaborate patterns as they go, something I do myself while creating my designs. Keeping my hands covered the rest of the day I was informed of the belief that if your Mendhi turns out very dark your mother-in-law will like you. As the paste started to peel away the bride(my girlfriend) and her girlfriends all teased me that my Mehndi was so dark!

I was so inspired by this tradition; its history, and the social nature of the ceremony that I had to make a carpet that recreates the experience.
