Adinkra is the name of a traditional fabric made by the Akan people of Ghana and the Côte d'Ivoire. The woven cotton is dyed and printed by hand in tar ink with symbolic images carved from wood. Historically, the intensive nature of the dying process meant the fabrics were reserved for royalty or to be used as funerary cloth. Recently however, the fabrics have become fashionable, frequently used in clothing design.
There are numerous symbols each representing different concepts. For this carpet I chose the Ram head, the sign of greatness and strength, and the Circle, the sign of humility. I love the art of symbology. It hints at meanings without explicitly relating a concrete idea, guiding viewers to create meaning for themselves.
